Title: One Game A Month
Post by: eXpl0it3r on January 13, 2014, 09:05:08 pm
Hey SFML Community!

I know there are many talented people here and mostly all are interested in developing some games, thus I thought some might be interested in hearing of One Game A Month (http://www.onegameamonth.com/). As the name says the idea is to create one game a month, so essentially twelve games in a year. There aren't really any rules to it, it's really just for fun and for the sake of making games. See the FAQ (http://www.onegameamonth.com/faq) for more information.

I found the page last year, but didn't participate, this year however I'll try to get those twelve games out. As soon as the first one is finished, I'll create a "megathread" for all games.

And here's the 1GAM 2014 Keynote:

Instead of talking 5 minutes about the same topic, the guy could have shown at least some games in his video ;)

The idea is interesting, especially when this is one of the few first projects and you need motivation to develop. But for me personally, it would be too constraining. There may be months when I don't have time at all, and I would need to hack something low-quality together just to adhere to my own restrictions... I prefer to develop when I have time, and for how long I consider it necessary until something is good... But that's my opinion, I can completely understand that people enjoy One Game A Month.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to your twelve games 8)

Not really, unless you do all the work on the 31th, but it could count as the February game. ;)

I completely understand that. And given that you've already two rather high quality games to present, shows that you actually get things done.
I on the other hand and I know the same goes for many other developers, never get to finish something, regardless of the quality. Plus it's not about creating quality games, but it's about having fun and learning from it.
Not to forget that even the "monthly" is a tensile,

It's a keynote not a gallery, plus showing off all the great games could make people try to achieve that kind of level, even though it should be about making your own thing at your own pace. :)

If you want to see games from someone that made successfully last year, check out this thread (http://www.spieleprogrammierer.de/12-projekte-und-stellenangebote/19533-one-game-a-month/).

I definitely don't have time for something like this, but it looks pretty neat. I look forward to seeing your megathread. ;)

I really would like to participate, but I already know that some months I wont have the motivation for it.
But let's try !

It would be pretty interesting to make something like this! I guess it would take good organization to deal with it, but still a perfect idea! I will think about it myself :D

The official submission deadline is always the 4th of the following month, so enough time. Plus the rules aren't enforced, it's more about being a personal challenge. So even if you'll need another day, noone will "disqualify" you or whatever.
