Title: Dispersio is now available on Steam!
Post by: achpile on June 16, 2016, 11:17:29 pm
Dispersio is now available on steam!

http://store.steampowered.com/app/563180

Story
After a disastrous geological experiment, the Earth was ruptured into dozens of asteroids, some of which hold remnants of what humanity had left behind. Many space travelers explore these asteroids in search of treasures and ancient relics. It took approximately twenty years to gather information about the location of the mysterious ancient crystal, which will give arcane power to whoever first obtains it - and so our brave hero seizes the chance to go on a perilous adventure and be the one to unearth the crystal. Who knows where it will lead?

Gameplay
Dispersio is a retro-styled action platformer. As you progress through the game, you will have to use and combine special abilities, such as dashing, wall-jumping and more.

There's even a hard mode for hardcore players. Can you beat each level without dying?

Looks cool :) I think that the background doesn't fit with the tiles though :o

This has coming among since the post you made in the screenshot thread; nice work!

It does have an authentic retro feel to its look but it does seem to contradict itself within its graphics "retro limitations". For example, a lot of the design seems to suggest that one colour can be used at any time inside a certain area (technically two, if you include the background) but then there are area with multi-coloured images with a number of colours per similar block. Do you have a certain target style? Which platform(s) do you take as inspiration for the style?

Thanks, @Hapax! Hmm, I don't limit myself with amount of different colors per screen, I just making game to look fine  ;) Colors are chosen from CGA palette (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_8-bit_computer_hardware_palettes#CGA)

And I'm inspired not by platforms, but by games =) "VVVVVV" and "You have to win the game"  :)

Ah, yes, I can see that You Have To Win The Game does the same thing: mostly monochromatic background tile graphics with occasional multicoloured tiles including player sprite. The monochromatic tiles even adhere to the strict colouring system used in displays like the ZX spectrum where colour-clash is evident but the sprites and some multi-coloured tiles ignore this system. It's quite confusing yet slightly liberating at the same time  ;D

Colors are chosen from CGA palette (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_8-bit_computer_hardware_palettes#CGA)
I've investigated that page quite a bit. Infact, I included the CGA palette in Console Screen (https://github.com/Hapaxia/SelbaWard/blob/79ab58b379bb0fe540edfab26ec22324a20ca5a6/src/SelbaWard/ConsoleScreen.cpp#L179-L197).

Anyway, looks good. Can't wait to hear something about the story  :)

Wow, the story is really incredible and crazy  :D

The earth was collapsed after nuclear wars to the asteroids, and the asteroids contains some pieces of human buildings etc. For example factories, castles, sewers, catacombs. And the other asteroids contains piesec of earth landscapes, for example icebergs, mounts, caves.

After Earth collapsed a lot of space researchers flown to the asteroids to loot values. So, the main character picked the asteroid with ancient castle to get the crystal which can fill a person with some powers.

And that's the intro.  ;D

PS: sorry, i'm still terrible in English.

Sorry for posting here too rarely, but I'll let you know when it'll be finished! I promise  ;)
For now all of the levels are done! So here's 2 screenshots of the last one  :P

Added achievements ( I think 22 is pretty enough, hehe  :D ).

And it's only dialogs and cutscenes left to be done... And steam support!
I'm planning to release it about end of September/start of October for Win, Linux and Mac.

Awesome! Looking forward to it.

Are you gonna do a Steam Greenlight or do you submit it differently to Steam?

Yeah! I'll submit it to Steam Greenlight, but only when the game will be almost finished. I hope it will be soon :)
And of course I'll post about it ^-^

What I completely forgot to ask I think:

Does the game have some built-in timer for speedrunning? If so, maybe add that as a visible feature as well. I could bet there are speedrunners out there who'd get interested immediately. :)

Of course there is  :D Even with usec precise  ;) And in-game timer counts only in-game time (I mean not the level selection, pauses, cutscenes etc.)
Title: Re: Dispersio is on the Greenlight!!!
Post by: Mario on September 03, 2016, 11:06:58 pm
You should add that to the Greenlight feature list then I guess. :)

Just a small critique of the trailer: it takes 34 seconds for gameplay to begin. That's too slow, people usually don't have that much patience.
You should jump straight to gameplay as fast as possible. Or maybe try to show the story with in-game cutscenes if it's really that important. :D

Good luck with the Greenlight!

Thanks, Elias! In fact the first version of greenlight trailer contained much more gameplay, but I thought it's not a good thing to show all of the character's abilities in trailer :D

Can I ask you how you integrated steam? I managed to get the overlay pop up, but it crashes on screenshots..

Steam overlay should actually work out of the box once you launch your SFML program through Steam. The other API stuff is provided by the steamapi.dll (and platform equivalents), although I'm not sure about the licensing terms regarding the API details.
