Title: ['request'] Overall navigationbar
Post by: eXpl0it3r on January 18, 2011, 01:44:59 am
Heyho!

I know I'm the newbie here and should first look around a bit more, but there's that 'thing' that I really don't like about the website...
When programming and learning new stuff, I jump pretty often between many diffrent sites, tuts, docs, forum and so on. Normaly not that big of a deal, but here at sfml-dev, I always have to edit the URL to get my navigation back...
I know the diffrent parts run with diffrent 'software' and so it's not that easy to get a navibar over all the websites, but try it and it will please the user! ;-)

It doesn't have to be as big as the one on the front page but just a few small links to navigate between Download, Forum, Wiki, Doc and Tuts!

Thanks in advance and my respect for the great work with SFML! =)

What do you mean? There is a navigation bar on the website. It is the green sidebar. Or do you mean on the wiki and forum?

I don't have much trouble myself. This is what tabbed browsers were invented for.

If you're on the forum you can use the SFML logo up the top to return to home.

EDIT: Besides, you won't be using the tutorial (once you've done them) or downloads section that much will you? I guess a link to the docs and wiki on top of the forum could be useful, though I prefer a local copy of the docs and wiki visits are... infrequent to say the least.

Your both right, but still I would like the feature to have an navigationbar on all the subsites if SFML ;-)

From both the wiki and the forum you can go back to the home page. From there you can then access any section of the website. So basically you can go anywhere in maximum two clicks. Is it really too much?

Ah I see there are links but since the website isn't build consistently with the same design, it's kinda hard to figure out where to click...
I know it now, but there are a lot of people who will stumple over this genious library and maybe end up with the same problem.
So I don't care if you change anything, it was just something that bothered me and I saw a solution for efficacy that many many other sites make use of.
So it's your site and your decison (and your responsibility...). ;-)

If I remember correctly, Laurent promised to remake the entire website for SFML2 or am I wrong?

Right. At least I'd like to :D

Thanks, but I love programming websites, it's so much easier than C++
I just need time.

You are getting a pretty big community Laurent. If you feel that you don't have enough time then exploit that ;-)

Well, it's not that simple. I don't want someone else to write the entire website, because that person will then probably go away and leave me one day with something to maintain that I don't know anything about. This is what happened before, for bindings.

But there's another way to help with the website. I'm a pure programer, which means that I'm terrible at creating graphics stuff. So maybe I can see if the SFML community can help me with the website template, SFML logo, etc. What do you think about it?

Well you could simply use something like Wordpress or simply a CMS website. Though I bet you don't want something premade :P

That's a pretty good idea. You could make it into a sort of "contest" without a prize more than the credz :P
Though a programming community contributing with graphics, that might be hard unless here's some wannabe-renaissance man.

Note: I might be able to trick some of the game-artists at my school to do something ^^

Not such a good idea. Those types of sites all look the same and are horribly bloated. I like the fact that the SFML site is very quick to load. It especially makes a difference on slower internet connections.

The technical part is not a problem at all. I don't need fancy stuff on the website, only static pages.
I'd rather focus on the tools: forum, wiki, task tracker.

Do you plan to change the whole website, not only the forum? I thought there are mainly some PhpBB problems. Or what's wrong with the rest, e.g. the wiki?

The wiki is fine.
The task tracker needs to be updated, and used a lot more (currently it's not really relevant nor useful).
The forum needs to be migrated to something more recent.
The website needs a slight update (both visual and functional).

And an overall menu...  :D
