What is Paradox?
Paradox is a game based on a Zombie Apocalypse.
It is a top-down 2D shooter, with an RPG aspect.

Currently, you have one goal...Survive.

You can find Metal/Wood, and craft guns to stay alive, but you also have to craft ammo!

There is Blood, Fog/Clouds, Zombies, and Day/Night system with a Day counter.

This game is in PRE-Alpha, meaning it's no where near close to being finished, and will continue to get better!

You can craft via putting items in the crafting box in a certain pattern or "recipe". We give you 2 right away in the read_me file, so check it out.

Default Controls
---------------------------------
Left mouse click -- Shoot / Place Wall (or other objects)
Right mouse click -- Punch / Activate Work Bench / Open Doors
Shift -- Run/Sprint (Gains momentum overtime)
W, A, S, D -- Movement Controls (Changable)
I -- Inventory (Unchangable)
M -- Rotate Object (Placeable Object) (If in HotBar and Selected)
O -- Opens up debug information.
R -- Manual Reload (Changable / Uses current ammo)
Escape -- Exits out of any menu/game state.


How to gather resources?
---------------------------------
Move on top of an resource and press Space once.
A progression bar will be displayed over head.
Once progression bar is filled (100%), a random resource will
fall on to the ground (which you can pick up and use)

To login to game, you'll have to make an account on our site, but it IS free :) (Offline mode is there though :) )

-House generation (with random houses generated with goodies inside the house!)
-More items to craft (Think floors/Walls/minor-mods/weapons/etc)
-Hunger system! (Food heals you and it can kill you if you don't eat!)
-More information sent from the game to your profile at our site! (stats!) (http://xsgteam.net)
-Fixed a bunch of bugs when you could view things in Pause/Death screen!
-Also new variable handles which gui box displays first! (So hover over health and crafting box, wont display both)
-Added sfx (when buying/selling items)
-Added sfx (when punching zombie!)

-Added sfx (when eating burger)
-Added option in menu to turn off tips.

I played your game a bit! It is pretty cool, no doubts :D

I didnt manage to make the pistol :(

Pistol - recipe in read_me
SMG - secret recipe
Ak47 - secret recipe
Rifle - can't be crafted yet
Winchester - can't be crafted yet
Shotgun - secretrecipe

I just played the game, and overall it looks nice. Still, there are some  problems:
- I don't think crafting the pistol is possible, I tried a few times and it doesn't work
- The character should move relative to its facing. So if i'm facing right and press W, i want to move right, not up.
- The character has way too many hit points, he should die in 2-3 hits

Also, I don't like the fact that I am forced to register on the site just to try out the game.

There will be an offline mode later on, no worries sorry about forced registration, if you absolutely have a problem with not wanting to sign up, we can send a non-login version.

The pistol should by all rights be possibly, although there is a crafting bug that only "sometimes" works..

Your site doesn't seem to work with Opera, but worked fine with Firefox 4.

Yes, I did try the correct recipe.

Also, there is another slot in the work bench, just right of the recipe. What is that for?

That slot is where the item you're trying to make will pop up.
if you craft a, pistol, per-say, once the recipe is completed the pistol will show in the slot to the right.

The site is designed in FF 3.6+ best for 4.0, tested in Opera/Safari and all worked for me.

if it's not too much to ask, can you take a screenshot of your crafting recipe?
if not, it's ok.

like I said, it does have some bugs, so it's always good people are finding them :)

that's the issue we're having, it'll work sometimes..lol

thanks though for submitting the bug issue, we'll be working on it for awhile, and when done will release a patch, with "Offline" mode.

Have you tried restarting your game?

Yes, I've got a few suggestions. I tried to think of stuff which wouldn't be too hard to implement, but would improve the overall amtosphere:
- footsteps :
I think it would be cool if characters would leave footsteps in the grass. Also, even better would be if the character would get blood on his feet, and leave a thinner and thinner trail, until it dissapears. You could do the blood using transparency. Also, perhaps you could add this element in the gameplay later on, making the monsters track you down.
- monster speed:
I think it would add to the dynamic if the monsters where either slower ( and more ) or faster (and more rare ) than the character, so you're actually afraid when you run into one ( or many :) ).
- "craft" button for the table
- animation for collecting items, or at least change the pose;
Also, don't allow the player to change direction while collecting items.

This is what I could think of. I'll let you know if I get some more ideas.

Days seem long, a way to check what time it is could help! As well as a couple of hours zombie-free, to invest in RPG aspects, while the rest of the time, fight like crazy!

Also, please insert a feature to inform the player of whats happening, like a log message that stays some seconds, such as "You have obtained scrap metal x1".

If the resource thingies could throw up recipes with a low chance, could help guessing the combinations, i guess :D

and cmon, let us see the pistol working :D

Good job man, the game was not perfect yet, not 100% playable yet, but i simply loved the way you finish well the features that are already there!
Everything that was there, seemed to work nice, which really made it taste better :D

I will have the pleasure to play your game through when there are more things, for now i will just experiment here and there because it gets boring without the action :D

hold Left Shift to sprint ^_^.
if you press "O" you can see debug text, and see GlobalTime(Time of day)
starts at 0 and complete darkness at 230.
and noted on fast pace.

Multiplayer is planned VERY soon ;)

I'm currently undergoing the "planning" stage of it.

Say, would you know how to transfer a dynamic std::vector and std::list through packets in sfml? xD

Im not used with sfml networking at all brother!

But you probably need to write a function to send the items individualy! I don't think a vector or a list can go binary and back without harm :D

I'm experimenting with the >> << operator settings and seeing what I can come up with.

Be sure to check back in a month, we work on this everyday (5+ hours a day)

We actually are planning something HUGE for it. "Adventure" mode for it.
basically instead of now "Survive" you get to play with the RPG concept of it and BUILD a paradise in an zombie apocalypse.

This really is just a demo of our engine :)

Looks to me that it's a Zombie version of Minecraft. So far you can only craft weapons right? Do you intend to let the user craft anything else for like fortifications or maybe upgrade his house or something like that?

Also after making my first Ammo, I can't make ammo again?

Walls, Food, Armor, and MANY more items are planned.

Currently there is:
1 secret item
6 guns
1 shirt(lol)
1 ammo

It kinda has the feel of minecraft, but it wont be nearly the same ;)

Be sure to read up on our adventure mode plan (above posts).

Ammo should work fine.
There is a crafting bug I am fixing right now as a matter of fact. so that may be it.

May I ask what's your general FPS?
I wanna do a survey of average speeds to make sure the game isn't too laggy.

The game is running well on 60-65 FPS on my laptop. If you add more things to craft I definitely think that the game got potential, if you add some kind of base-building to the whole thing.

Excellent, it's capped at 60.

We'll be adding ALOT now that the engine is almost done.

Knew it! Knew I was gonna do it with the weapon, though I tried with a pistol.. so hmm let's see.. how would you make a SMG.. I guess you use the pistol for that. ( Let me try figure this one out myself or else it won't be any sport :P )

Also a great idea for the environment, put it in an urban environment and have doors and let the user walk around in different shops to get resources and scavenge there. So instead of zombies taking down walls they can break the doors that the player closes after him, and instead of letting the user build walls he builds barricades like nailing down the door or putting sandbags in the way. Also as a nice effect for when you get Multiplayer, if a player dies, turn his body into a zombie :D

:Hint: Smg is very similar to AK47 recipe, but no wood, and not as much metal, and yes with pistol :p

Urban environment is what we're going for, we'll add ruins, broken down buildings, even NPC's that sell you stuff, you'll be able to team up with survivors or kill them all >:)

I LOVE The multiplayer dying suggestion!

Well the image doesn't change on the character, though I think you already know that. Dual wielding would be cool. Though crafting modifiers to the gun would be awesome. Maybe lasersight, clip-extensions, stabiliser(increase accuracy). Add durability to the weapon so that it degrades over time first doing less damage and being less accurate and at last become completely useless.

Maybe some explosive weapons too?

Gun Mods: Planned, and Structure of code is already there.

Well the durability is kind of two way depending on how you look at it. If you take a game like Diablo 2 where we have durability on the weapon. It adds nothing to the gameplay and is only an irritation moment where you have to go back and repair your weapon. Though in your game which is about survival it would add a level of difficulty to the game as the player will be in deep shit if he doesn't take care of his weapons.

A feature like that can both make and break gameplay. It all boils down to: "Does it fit in our game? Will it add something to the game? If yes then what?"

Very good point, I actually think it may fit into the game, we'll have to sit down and think about it :)

Also Do you find the zombie count appropriate?
Click "O" and find "ZombieCount" variable to see how many zombies are currently on the map.

Well yeh but with a little modification. I had 25 when I looked. But I think that it should be those 25, in a group together. You know the classical zombie is that they come in hordes. You know the zombies don't have to be spawned. You can randomly choose "Aight let's horde him now" and send a massive way chasing him. So you spawn them at a moment and as they spawn they immediately come after him from just right outside the screen.

Another possibility is that the zombies can be drawn together, so that they slowly lurk to together and over time amass a large horde.

Interesting, we may just implement that..

straggler zombies and Mass hordes, sounds pretty awesome :D

Hey guys it's been updated with a bunch of your suggestions, thanks!
we BELIEVE crafting bug has been fixed, however you must use NEW saves, and old ones will not work...

New Updates from 0.0.50 to 0.0.51:
-Gathering stopped when shooting/punching
-Added Scrap Rubber!
-Added more recipes. (Changed recipes to require rubber)
-Added more gui to crafting! (And crafting button!)
-Added rifle (allows rifle/winchester!)
-Added night/day gui (orb)
-Fixed crafting bugs
-Fixed collision bugs
-Offline mode

Wow, that was really fast.
But crafting still isn't working for me ( and yes, I did press the craft button ). I tried to craft ammo and it works, but doesn't work for pistol.

oh, forgot to mention, crafting recipes are now changed.
you need rubber now.

Nice with the craft button for weapons. I guess that fixed your bug. But the thing is it makes it harder to find recipes(If you add a way to find them then no worries) and also ammo was freakin annoying to make. I could only make one batch at a time. IF you could allow us to press "Craft" several times and let the ammo stack in the crafting slot.

What is it that you can't craft? I've been able to craft everything :P
The thing is that you have to place the things exactly right. Like Ammo, you have to place the scrap metal in the slot in the middle.

Guns with rubber grip on images (Pistol/Smg) require rubber now, are you using it? :)

umm, bottom right corner needs to be rubber instead of metal ^_-

Try that and see if it works :)

Another HUUUGE update! Game now contains an updater, that will detect when a new update is available and automatically download the required files! :D

SOOOO Many new features!! :D

Small list of Updates from 0.0.60 - 0.0.80 (Can't fit all ;) )
-NEW! Zombie AI! (Zombies now are smarter then eever!)
-Did much optimization with views (More fps)
-New appeal to Inventory/Crafting Slots and Screens
-Added Design for Main Menu/Login Screen (more features as well)
-Added Modding system added (For weapons, which increases certain stats of a weapon)
-Added Shop system (Enables you to sell resources and gain money to buy items! (mods/weapons/rares)
-Added Currency system (for shop system!)
-New Collision system for everything (Easier to get by smaller places! And less glitches!)
-Added building system (allows you to build with blocks you either make or buy)
-More work done with profiles (Longest day survived/Most money/Total score/Total kills/etc!) (only for users logged in)
-House generation (with random houses generated with goodies inside the house!)
-More items to craft (Think floors/Walls/minor-mods/weapons/etc)
-Hunger system! (Food heals you and it can kill you if you don't eat!)

That's ok :)
Hopefully soon, we'll attempt to re-make paradox, but this time around, we'll feel more confident and it'll be quicker and easier.

The reason we stopped was because the project became so messy, and we just weren't experienced enough to finish it. So we just called it a learning project and cancelled it until further notice.

The only bad thing is, we lost all source code to it xD, so it'll definitely be made from scratch, which is a good thing to be honest...heh.

I didn't know anyone even remembered Paradox, haha.
