Title: SFMLUploads.Org [OFFLINE]
Post by: Haikarainen on May 27, 2011, 10:15:30 pm
News: The site has been adopted by expl0iter. I dont know when it will be up again but it should be soon enough.

I'm hereby declaring this thread deprecated as he should probably create a new thread for the re-release.

Thanks for the support, hopefully this project will live longer under expl0iters wing.

Very nice that you have expended the effort of installing such a site! Thanks a lot :)

Maybe you should make the difference to the official Wiki a little bit clearer, especially concerning source codes. For example like this:

Uploads: Images, archives, temporary code snippets
Wiki: Project presentations, tutorials, reusable source code

Maybe you should make the difference to the official Wiki a little bit clearer, especially concerning source codes. For example like this:

Uploads: Images, archives, temporary code snippets
Wiki: Project presentations, tutorials, reusable source code

SFML Uploads will not serve as a project-presentation page at all, its just "raw" archive files and screenshots, to use mainly in this forums, for example as download links on project threads/their blog etc,  and embedding screenshots in topics. See this as an alternative to that ugly megaupload links you see all over the forums, with the ads, the wait etc. SFML Uploads will be 100% ad-free, free of charge etc.

The codesnippet thing is useful in these forums as well, not as whole project sources, but as snippets you have a problem with.
Lets say hypothetically that im creating a thread in the helpsection, having problems compiling my code. I could then upload a codesnippet with the narrowed down code that im having problems with, including related problemcode. This allows users on this forums to not only view the code im having trouble with, but also create a new version of it(wich will be listed when viewing the original source), so that they easily can reply with a "fixed" code, or marked out lines that is problematic in a logical way or likewise.

As for the wiki, its good as a "stable", "permanent" site with tutorialcode, examples, whole presentations etc, but not for temporary usage like problematic code.

Hope you get my point :) And its nice to see that you appreciate this!

The serverissue seems to loosen up a little.

I've calculated some numbers and in 1-2 months i should have a new server with these specs:

Code: [Select]
Juice: Corsair CX 430W
Motherboard: MSI GF615M-P33 AM3 mATX
Processor: AMD Athlon2 X4 645 3,1GHz
Harddisk drive: 500GB Seagate ST3500413AS
Memory: Corsair 8GB (2x4096MB) 1333MHz XMS3
Ethernet: Integrated 10/100/1000mbit

The current server consists of :

Code: [Select]
Processor: Intel(R) Celeron(TM) 1.2GHz
Memory: 512MB SD-RAM
Ethernet: Intel 82801BA/BAM/CA/CAM(rev 03)
VIA VT86C100A [Rhine] (rev 06)
Harddisk: 36GB

Hehe, yep. To begin with, if the site gets more attention than i expected i might hire a dedicated server. But since i use to have good uptime and service, it should really take much performanceissues before i even think to do that.

It's a great job you've done here! Thank you very much!  :)

If you want to translate it, maybe you can write here the sentence in English you want us to translate. This way it can be done very fast as anyone can share her/his knowledge.

BTW, there's no contact page on the site so it can be hard for someone who don't already know you to contact you (if he has found a bug or want to thank you...).

As soon as I've finished multiple language support, I'll upload a languagefile here.  Thanks for reminding me to make a footer btw, my mail is linked to the copyright text there now.

Really good initiative and nice work !  8)

I started playing with the website, but I noticed a display error when the logout link is hovered (Chrome 12).

When you move your mouse over, the link goes bold and moves to the line below, which makes the click impossible.

Thanks, I've meant to fix that(didn't know it was unclickable tho), but since my username Haikarainen is kinda wide(logout goes one line down either way), i've forgot it. It is fixed now by inserting a sweet <br /> :)
Title: SWEET!
Post by: David on June 15, 2011, 01:05:14 pm
This is amazing

I can finally upload stuff to a website that's not blocked :D

Couple of bugs:

1. When you upload an image with a transparent background, some weird black squares covers it up

2. How the heck can you share the uploads? (EDIT: I figured it out)

Here it is:
https://legacy.sfmluploads.org/cache/pics/18_USFML%20Logo.png
(with the weird black squares)

And here's the cleaner version:

https://legacy.sfmluploads.org/getpic.php?id=18

For some reason, the edges look a little aliased, but shrinking it would make it better

Thanks alot :) I have (almost) fixed the issue now, the thumbnails will still have a black background for now(until ive fixex it), but the "whole" pics should look ok.

Regarding the uploads, I'm wondering if it is REALLY hard to figure that out, or were you just unfortunate? I want everyone to know how to use this site :P

Edit; Belive it or not, i cant really see the cleaner version, only the owners of the picture can download the original :P

Yea, I don't really care about the background being black, but it just looks too weird when it's only partially black and blocky

On a side note, your website is AMAZING! :D  I can never get php to work on my computer, so my website is pretty much a dud. Keep up the good work!

EDIT: Now it looks just like the "cleaner" version

And about the uploads, it's because most websites where you upload images (such as imgur) have a link that says "Share"

I'm just spoiled by that, that's all. But it wouldn't hurt to make a "Share" button that creates a BBCode tag automatically for this forum. That would be awesome

EDIT: This is probably gonna be the last time I'll request stuff, but:

1. Can you temporarily keep the user logged in? Or make a remember username/login (It says "This site uses cookies" on the bottom   )

2. Can you have a "Delete" button with the file?

Thanks alot man :D Glad to hear my work is appreciated.

Regarding the sharethingy for pictures: Ill get right on that ;)

On your serverissue:
If you run windows, WAMP 2.0 is a very nice serversoftware kit.. Its basically Apache, PHP, MySQL and phpmyadmin in a simple installer.
If you run Linux, i can hint you that in debian(and probably ubuntu too), the following command installs all of it : "apt-get install mysql-server phpmyadmin", since phpmyadmin is dependent of apache and php with mysql-modules, and mysql-server installs a mysqlserver for it ;)

EDIT: Yeah, been thinking about that too, just gotta pull my finger out of my ass and find the session-timeout for php/apache :P

I think I tried WAMP at some point. I might've lost it somehow :P
I'll try again. Someday I'll get it to work

EDIT: Another small thing: The thumbnail seems to crop the image instead of shrinking it

Hehe, fixed the share thing, hope its enough.

Testing if it works properly:

Edit: Yep thats true, looks good for screenshots and other images that have a filled content (nontransparent pixels). It basically crops the thumbnailsize in the middle of the picture.. Try uploading a real screenshot

I found a display bug: just search for " " or "ksks" and you see it.

And to make the search box a bit more user friendly:
Code: [Select]

<form method="post" action="index.php?page=search">
<input id="searchbar" value="Search.." type="text" name="q"
     onfocus="if (this.value == 'Search..') {this.value = '';}"
     onblur= "if (this.value == '') {this.value = 'Search..';}"/>

Some stuff:

-A "Delete" button for every file and image
-Thumbnail crops image
-Temporarily saving the account/remembering the username/account (although you're probably working on that right now)

1. Already on it , as stated.
2. Thumbnail will always crop images, its meant to be. The imageupload is for screenshots and cropped thumbnails is always fancier than shrunk for screenshots. As stated.
3. Already fixed, will take some time to take effect tho.

well 640x480 is more than enough for a screenshotthumbnail independant of its originsize. Also if i just shrunk it id get ratioissues. Anyway this is the way i like to do it and this is the way im going to do it. end of discussion :P

I tested your site but 2 problems :
- when Im logged in and I press News, I log out
- I uploaded 2 little file for test but I can't see them in my stuffs

But that's a great initiative.

Pity I can't use it for my updator example files (cause I need folder structure for my files)

SFMLUploads may be doomed

Since i released the site I've seen very little activity, and it seems like im wasting electricity on hosting it. It currently has ~35 users and there has been 0 serious code-entries(used for what they are meant to), like 4-5 screenshots, and around 2 fileuploads..

If anyone wants to take over it contact me and I'll send you my files

 , it provides a better file management than the most part of the file hosting  :'( (without dropbox, but it's heavy and doesn't have code or picture hosting).

Don't give up yet! The project is only a few weeks old, and I think it is just not well-known enough yet to be used by the whole SFML community. It would be a huge pity if you dropped support, SFMLUploads really has big potential.

Concerning the code snippets, it seems like my initial fear has come true: People don't know why they should post code on your site, if they can directly insert it into forum posts. For the more elaborated codes, users probably use the Wiki.

I think sfmluploads.org's main application lies in the screenshots. I believe there have been more than only 4-5, at least I have sometimes seen pictures from your site in this forum, and I have just uploaded two myself. The other important use case is archives for people who don't have a website to host their projects (mostly small games).

Maybe we should all spread the word and recommend your site every time an external file hoster is used, that's probably the best way to make SFMLUploads more popular.

Wondering, can I have my videos there for download if someone would like to have them available for offline use? The first video was 40mb but the second video on 20 minutes are on around 70mb. Of course they will be in archives so the size should go down even more.

Uploading the vids to your site now ^^ Will be sharing them here in my project topic.

Though the last video archive was a few MB too big so I had to separate it into 2 parts so now I got Video Part 1 and Video Part 2. Video Part 2 is in turn divided into two parts XD

I tried uploading a file that is not allowed, after 10min of uploading I finally got the message...

Quote
File-extension not allowed!

Perhaps better to first check the extension before uploading.

This is already noted but is lowpriority atm. To check for that i would have to use javascript on the submitbutton, and parse the filename from there, and decide wether to submit or error you in the face before actually submitting the form. But since it's already planned to replace the uploadform with Ajax, it will have to wait.

With ajax you will also be able to view filetransfer as you upload, with some other small goodies :) Until then; Read what you are about to do before doing it, sorry for the inconvinience

One suggestion: Don't make link text bold when moving the mouse above it. Leads sometimes to flickering because the link is wrapped.

Hehe, word on that, but belive it or not its a good method to spread your word ;)

Yes, yes i do. I've had pretty little time on my hands lately to provide to this page. Working on a game with 2 other people wich we intend to sell on steam later, also i was recently sentenced to community service for some stupid fiddle-faddle. Thank you for this site, very nice work!

I've got some ideas:
- It'd be nice to select all the contents of an URL-box when clicking into it, or to have a button nearby "Copy to clipboard".
- Standard-sized thumbnails of the uploaded images, and links to these thumbnails. When clicking on such a link in a forum, it would load up SFMLUploads and show the thumbnail first, and clicking on the thumbnail would show the larger image. The URL could be ".../user/thumb_test.jpg" and the picture URL: ".../user/test.jpg".
- When you share some code, there's a text like "Copy code here..." which should be cleared when I click into the editbox.
- Mulitiple uploads of images and files! That would be great!
- And as I've stated before, it was strange for me to see no button on the right side to upload screenshots. Since they're treated differently anyway, I think it'd be nice to have such a button. What do others think?

I'm curious that what are the statistics so far? Are people actually using this site? Because I really like both the idea, and the site itself! Good job :D

It's not meant to be a gallery, but merely a fileserver provider.

Kinda like how it is when browsing your own images? Except you post a thumbnail wich links to the bigger thumbnail and description, wich then links to the full image? Sounds really good actually. Will look that up.

Yes, yes. There is a lot of small things that bug me with the codeuploading actually. Will also implement a popout-button for codes that extend the width of the container.

11 versions of altered code from 11 unique original codes and 7 unique users.

Skimmed the thread and would like to point out some things that I would like to see (if possible):

1. Delete button for uploads - sometimes we might have to upload stuff extensively and things that aren't used should not occupy space on the server.

2. Update button for uploads - upload a new file and delete the old one (so that the link for the file stays the same, but this way you can get the updated content from the same link)

Absolutely. I've seen this solution on other file sharing sites. The aim would be to reduce the image size on forums: if someone is interested, he clicks on the thumbnail, and gets redirected to SFMLUploads, where he can see the big picture.

My partner and I have started a company, and when everything goes all right, I'll certainly be able to donate. I guess you need it to move SFMLUploads to a paid host service. I've got plans with SFML anyway.

It just came to my mind: is there a limit now about how much data (code + screenshots + files) can be uploaded overall per person? Because if there will be a "Delete" button, there should be a limit, too. This way, one should clean up his directory from time to time. Or hey, here goes the buisness, one could increase the storage room with X megs if he pays X dollars on paypal.

No, never!

SFMLUploads will stay a free service no matter what. And no there is no max limit, except for individual file sizes. As long as people dont abuse the service i see no reason to limit it  etc.

You can implement a warn and ban system to punish people who abuses the site. You might not always be aware that you are abusing it.

If everybody can upload, and the files stay where they are for good, then once you'll be out of free space.

It's Chromium 13.0.782.107 (Developer version 94237 Linux) Built on Debian unstable, running on Linux Mint Debian Edition. The borders in Firefox are all right though. And yes it already happened before. I think it's just a simple CSS problem, supposing the border+shadow is an image, use "no-repeat" at the background-repeat property.

Yes, the cache isn't being deleted yet, the picture shouldn't be available under "mypics" tho, since all data + original picture is deleted from the mysql database. Will fix cache when i fix "are you sure" :)

Debian unstable as in 7 or unstable as in pre-stable 6 ? I have a virtual box running stable 6.0, will start it up and start checking.

EDIT; Downloaded repo-release of chromium on debian 6 stable, no error here :S Also, the border + shadow is a bgimage, but this shouldnt happen, this there is some position/size-offset somewhere.
I tweaked the CSS a little to let it be more strict, does it work now?
Cant seem to reproduce the problem in any of;
Windows-> Firefox 6, Internet Explorer 8, Google Chrome
Debian-> Iceweasel, Chromium

It's Debian Wheezy/Sid. I've just copy-pasted what I've seen in the About section of Chromium. I'm on Debian Testing though. Anyway! The problem is gone, my friend! I've added and deleted an image, and the borders are shown all right! It was a sooo minor bug anyway! But now, it's perfect in all the browsers. Thank you! :)

I've got it! Separate this feature from screenshots! There could be an 'Upload avatars' button, which would have width/height and size restriction. And the avatars wouldn't have a watermark on them.

Well, it would be very simpler to just ignore waterstamps on uploaded images that have a resolution lower than a defined value. But I guess you're right that it might be misleading since they're called screenshots.

Hehe, I might create this kind of thing for the site to make it more like a sourceforge-thingy, but I really dont have the time now :/

Also, the base idea behind this site is just to give tools for uploading files, the "social"/pr-part youll have to do yourself.

Big sad news post: I feel obligated to share some news with you; Because I totally forgot a domainname-payment, the domain sfmluploads.org will be unavailable in a few days. I've contacted my provider to do something about it, but since the domainname is allready unregistered I will have to wait 6 months to reactivate it again.

Also I have been really busy with stuff lately so I have not had the time to continue working on SFMLUploads lately, but I've done my best to keep uptime.

I will soon reply in this thread with an alternate domainname so that people can still access their files, since I belive people might have backups or other work on my server not available anywhere else.

The future of the site?

I might renovate the site under a different name, dev-cloud.net, since I allready own that domainname and it is unused, and perhaps open it for more than SFML users. I will consider if I have time for this option, but this is not 100% likely, and if it happens that I dont, I think SFMLUploads needs a new daddy: Think you can host the site, maintain uptime, keep it up to date and pay for a domain? Contact me in mail.

It is currently running on linux, apache, mysql and php, but mysql and php will probably do. I can export the database using phpmyadmin.

That's really a pity, now people use these ad-overloaded services again. Also because all existing links to images, codes and archives become invalid...

Why do you have to wait 6 months to re-register the domain?

Yes it really is. It is apparently my domainnameproviders policy, I will contact them further to see if there is any possibility to revive it.

Good news! Ignore my last posts, I spoke to my provider, they agreed to reactivate the bill so I could pay it, wich I did. Domain should stay untouched :)

Up again. I understand it is annoying, its just as annoying for me.  I am currently looking into paying for hosting  the server with my domainprovider. That way they have to make sure its online.

Well I've been in contact with Haikarainen a few weeks back, he had agreed to give me the whole dataset of the website and redirect the domain to my hoster, so I could host it. Unfortunatly I haven't heard back from him since.... :-\
He's quite busy with his RL so I understand, but still hope he can spend around 10min to pack the data, send it to me and redirect the domain. Would make live easier and an awesome project run again, instead of dying. :)
I'm gonna write him again after this message.

Server is online, DNS's are changing: Server should be available in max 24 hours now(but probably 15-30 min).

I am very uncertain about the future of this site, I urge you to download all the data you wish to keep from SFML Uploads and to not rely on it in the future, at least until better and more certain news arrive.

Hmmm interesting change of mind, at least the users may now be warned and can take down their content. :-\

It's sad to see such a nice and helpful project go down and I'm not quite sure why you couldn't just put it on a server for which you didn't have to maintain the hardware, so you actually would've had much at your hands and could've only responded to urgent queries. But maybe I've no idea what all needs to be maintained in the background. :)

If you're still willing to give me (or anyone else) the source code I bet this project wouldn't need to die, but the creator of closed source stuff had the power to create it and the power to destroy it. :D

eXpl0it3r has now adopted this project, it should get online in a not-so-distant future.

Edit; Snap that was one big fontsize
