Network / Re: How to make a game multiplayer?
« on: December 03, 2017, 06:10:52 am »
There's nothing to be ashamed of, learning C++ from a PDF. It's no different than reading a book a college gives you. If you want some good tutorials in general you can check out packtpub.com they have a massive selection of programming books and videos that cover a wide array of topics including game programming.

One I would suggest is SFML Blueprints this book has a section dedicated to teaching you how to program a networked game. Another I would highly recommend is SFML Game Development By Example he does an amazing job explaining networking and takes you through a couple scenarios to get your feet wet with network programming.

I would definitely be interested in making a Tactical RPG... Final Fantasy Tactics is my favorite game of all time. I've also been trying to get people to team up with but to no avail.

I just wanted to drop by and give you a congratulations on getting GreenLit, that's awesome! I can't wait to see where this goes.

Arko, that actually sounds really cool... Leveling up stats by the actions that your character performs.. I can't wait to see it in action. Like I said I'm a huge fan, what is your projected release date? I understand that there are things you can't control, but if you were to give me a rough estimate?

This game reminds me of a game from the old Floppy Disk days... I just can't remember the name of it.. Awesome game though well done.

I support this 100%, man those graphics... Nicely done, they take me back to my childhood. I love Tactical RPGs I can't wait to try this out. I don't know if this was mentioned on Steam, I'm at work so I can't really check but will you be able to change each character's class?

I read the first two chapters then did a skim over the rest, it looks great. I'm wondering how I would go about incorporating this text into the server from the project in the final chapter of the last book. Can the shaders and lighting affects be handled solely on the client portion? I'm new to networked programming and just trying to learn everything I can.

I'm a little disappointed I still don't have it available yet. Packt pub come on, this was going to be my weekend project haha.

Sorry I hate to be that nagging person but this anticipation is killing me! The book was supposed to be out yesterday.. Just a delay from packtpub? Or has it been delayed for another reason?

One more question I have, does it utilize the game(s) from the previous book or is it a fresh start with new games and new everything?

This is pretty awesome, I look forward to more updates xD. I know this probably a question for later down the road but will you be publishing this for people to utilize? Like source or just even the editor itself?

OrderNexus this wait is killing me, do you have an estimate on how much longer until your new book comes out? I know you can't give a specific day but I'm eagerly awaiting it.

Thank you all for the feedback, taking into consideration everything I've read I think Lua 5.1 is what I will be studying. I plan on focusing primarily on C/C++ so given there are jobs that specifically state + Lua I think It would be a great use of my time, thanks again everyone.

I've been working with Lua for 3 years and having a great time with it, so feel free to ask any questions if you have any.

Awesome, thank you all for the suggestions. I think I'll try out Lua I've actually been following your top down 2D game Elias and it looks amazing. I'm just starting my Bachelor's Program so I want to study as much as I can outside of class. Do you have any good book suggestions? In regards to Lua?

Which scripting language is your preferred language to use? I've heard a lot of good things about Lua I just don't have a lot of time so I want to make sure I make a good choice.
