SFML projects / Re: Golden Spike - Public Transport Simulation
« on: October 31, 2021, 11:58:55 am »
That's awesome. I've always dreamed of building a traffic planning simulation myself. Golden Spike looks like how I'd have approached it myself. Really sweet!

I sent you a mail with a couple of questions. :)

(Disclaimer: I'm one of the authors of that book, so I won't recommend this one over the others)

Don't have false modesty, it's a good book. :-)

you all keep saying that, but its not really true

It still holds true. It does not only matter what people build with SFML, but what its creators defined as its scope. The scope does not imply game-specific components.

If at all, a game module would be imaginable. But that'd most likely lead to a fully fledged game engine, which is just not within SFML's scope. We have to cut it somewhere.

Also apologies from my side. While moving to a new host, all installed software versions were too new for our beloved SMF. Downgraded everything, now it's working again – including searches.  :o >:(

SFML website / Downtime of website
« on: March 19, 2019, 05:17:58 pm »
Hey guys,

today we experienced a DDoS attack at the server that's hosting this website. As a first measure, we are now blocking quite a lot of suspicious IP subnets.

If you or people you know experience connection issues, then please send a mail to tank at sfml-dev.org with your IP address, and we look into it.

Fixes

  • sfg::Desktop not properly handling mouse focus between windows.
  • Added missing <string> include.
  • Got rid of SendFakeMouseMoveEvent warnings.
  • Got rid of sf::RenderWindow::Create() deprecation warning.
  • Deactivated Test app features that are broken due to SFML changes.
  • Renamed OpenGL example to avoid a naming collision.
  • FindSFML.cmake updated, libjpeg not required anymore.
  • No WIN32_LEAN_AND_MEAN redefinition.

Forum should be fully working again. We had to update SMF for compatibility with PHP 7 (mysqli in favor of mysql) and patch a mod to make everything work again. Please tell us if you encounter problems.

And as a note of warning: If you ever intend to start a forum, do not use SMF.

We are back. Artifacts and some redirects aren't working at the moment, but the majority of the site is.

SFML website / Planned downtime
« on: September 27, 2018, 09:21:56 am »
Hey guys!

Our last step for improving stability of the SFML website + connected services is — like explained a couple of weeks ago — moving to a new server. This will happen today and shortly.

During that time, the website and forums will not be available. We can't say exactly how long it'll take, but everything should be operational again in a couple of hours max.

See you on the other side! ;-)

I understand your point. Although looking at how often we had issues, it's probably just not worth changing everything.

Having a project page down is bad, no doubt. But it's not like services are down for hours, every week. The GitHub project is still there as a last resort.

Cost is no factor, everything is sponsored and thus free for us to use. Speed is also no factor, except maybe for people from the US or Asia where latency can add up a bit.

We host 3 GiB of downloads, which increases with every release of course.

The only solution is to use a service that's redundant. As long as we have a single root server for serving the web services, adding mirrors won't do anything. Of course we could use DNS round-robin, but that's more of a joke IMO.

Using "good ol'" and capable webspace (read: managed) would solve the issue. GitHub pages is not good enough, we need PHP-enabled webspace for the forum. It doesn't make sense to split services for the main site and forum, when you can get one that handles both.

Services are back online. Performance will be at 100 % in a couple of hours, until the RAID has finished synchronizing. :-)

Thanks for your patience.

First HDD replaced, second one soon. Expect another 30-60 minutes of downtime soon.

Hello guys.

The server has a failing HDD which is just being replaced. It's difficult to find out which one of the 2 available is faulty, so we are replacing both.

As both HDDs form a RAID array, synchronization takes some time. Please be aware that the website will be unavailable a couple of times today. IRC will be available again when the whole process has finished.

I will announce further updates in this thread, as well through @sfmldev on Twitter.

Thanks and sorry for any inconvenience this might cause.
