How to create your own sound for game dev?
« on: June 23, 2013, 11:27:16 am »
Hello! I just want to ask if there is anyway I could make my own sounds without even recording? Do you know any tools that I could use?

Also I found this site called freesound.org. ITs great and it contains sounds that can be downloaded for free but of course it will be great if I am able to create my own sounds.

Thanks!

It really depends on what sounds you want. If you want sounds that you hear in real life, it will be very hard to recreate such effects.
If it should just be some random clicks noises, etc. then you can start with many different tools, but keep in mind that sound engineering is a profession on it's own, so don't expect it to be the easiest thing ever.

Very useful and easy to use tool (is also mentioned in the Ludum Dare guide) is sfxr. With just one click you can generate random sound effects and if you find one that you like, you can fine tune it further and then export it.

Otherwise there hard hunderds of resource websites, that provide sounds. One of my favorite one (not only for sounds) is OpenGameArt.

Nice exploit3r, I've been wondering about this myself, you won't be able to make convincing 'realistic' sounds unless you properly record it but you can make 8 bit stuff pretty easily, here's the types of things I found after a quick google search.

At least with this one you seem to be able to create some nice 8bit stuff, the problem is the technology just doesn't match the real instruments yet but people are getting pretty damn close.

Wonderful! Thanks for the resources and the heads up, yeah I forgot explicitly cite my needs, of course I thinking about like 8 bit sounds, just like the sounds you hear from the days of NES(Nintendo Emulator System).

If it is possible I may want another quality, like that of SNES as well. But thank you for reminding me that it will not be easy. Well I thought it was easy.

So are we just talking about sounds? I also wanted to compose some kind of recursive sound track, I changed the title of my post anyway. I also wanted music playing at the background.

Thanks again.

I just thought I'd say, I did some more digging being interested in this myself and I found Famitracker was much more easy to use and had a cleaner interface.

http://famitracker.com/

To make music, add an instrument, then you just press the red button to switch on edit mode and add in notes with the keyboard by selecting the rows.
