Ruin Rumble - a 2D split-screen platformer
« on: February 15, 2012, 10:26:38 am »
Hi everyone!

Ruin Rumble is a local-two-player competitive platformer, where the goal is to race about the map completing objectives and blowing each other up.

The game features some cool gimmicks, like simple 2D lighting, procedurally generated levels, slightly crude flowing water and lots of rocket jumps. It also has a super-cool chiptune soundtrack courtesy of xylo.

You can check out an exciting trailer here:

Here's a screenshot:

The game's free for Windows and Linux, and can be downloaded from my site: iameviltom.com.

The game uses SFML2 for all the rendering, sound and input. I've really found SFML to be a wonderful library, particularly for someone like myself who's only really getting started with game dev. All I can really say is a massive thanks to Laurent and everyone else who's contributed to the library. I've been taking every opportunity to blather about how great SFML is to anyone who'll listen!

So yeah, please check it out! Would be really happy if anyone gave it a play, and super grateful for any feedback!

Thanks!
tom

I really like the game nice graphics and sound! Well done.  :)

The game would profit a lot from an AI. I know it's not so easy but would be nice.
Additionally it would be could if one could play it over LAN/internet and with that option it would be really awesome to be able to expand it to more than two players, but those are just some ideas.

Thanks for the feedback! :)

All are features that I would love to add, but this is my first real game and I didn't want to bite off more than I could chew. For a long time I considered adding a single player mode that probably wouldn't be too dissimilar to Spelunky. In the end, though, I decided I'd rather move on to a new project and maybe revisit the idea in the future.

I did have a bit of a think about adding AI; I've never done any proper AI programming before though, so it's probably a bit out of my league. If I feel inspired I may attempt to write some simple AI in the future, so any pointers/advice in this area would be great!
