How do you make some colors transparent in a texture

Hello, i have some pictures ,which are in the .png format, that i made the back ground white, then i set the texture and of course the background was white. So now i need some one to tell me hoe to make a color of a sprite transparent.

Set a transparent color (alpha value = 0) instead of white.
