Help with particle system

Hi all
Struggling a bit with a particle system I'm trying to put into my Asteroids game. I've looked at the code on the github
here
and I tried to read through it to find what was simply necessary for a particle system to exist to no avail.
I will take any help I can get to build my own bare bones particle system in C++ using SFML or openGL

Please ask concrete questions. And next time, choose the right forum (your question is not about language bindings).
You can also try my particle system in Thor, in case you don't want to reinvent the wheel.
