MP3 is now free?
« on: May 26, 2015, 12:19:20 pm »
Hello

Last time I visited a lot of forums and one of them said that since 2010 MP3 format is free. So why does SFML still does not supports MP3 are there still any issues with the license?

Some of the patents expire in 2016 or 2017, and there are a lot of them in MP3 spec.

In general it's better to stay away from any software patents*, just to be 100% sure.

*except ones you own, ones from the open pool, expired ones and ones covered by community promises or if you don't care about US law and live somewhere where patents for software are not respected in law, but none of these applies to MP3 in SFML :P
