Java uses a thing that isn't even human but looks personified.
The Java mascot is as ugly as the language it's portraying  :P
:P Agree!

I've thought of maybe a cheetah for a mascot. It could either be adult-like, really fast, and tough/mean looking, or it could be child-like, young, and "cute" (the former emphasizes speed but is less memorable/iconic, the latter is more memorable/iconic and "hints" at speed).

Someone earlier suggested a bird (falcon?), and a Peregrine Falcon could work too.

I think a young, "cute" mascot would be better than an old, mean one, personally, because that helps it seem more "user friendly" (that is, the type of animal (cheetah or falcon) suggests fast, and the cute/friendly suggests simple and user friendly).

Thoughts?

I agree for cute/friendly. I have no opinion about the type of animal itself.

Cornstalks, would you be able to try something with an animal? That would be awesome :)

What about 5 triangles with the symbol for each module on each forming a pentagon with spacing that are overlaying the letters sfml. Perhaps the triangles can be transparent too. :)

Yeah, I'll try a cheetah and/or falcon over the weekend. I have what I think is a good idea... we'll see how it turns out in reality.

I'm afraid a human cartoon guy would look childish and goofy, but an animal mascot would be great.
They are widely popular among open source projects and users love them, I suggest you have a look at http://chl.be/mascots/ for some inspiration.
I had a look at it and there're some really funny ones ;D like for thttpd :

I would like a raven :P But  don't think that would fit in to the whole deal with SFML :P

How about hedgehogs? Why? Cause they are awesome!

Ow yeah, you might not know, but I have a hedgehog as a pet :P

PS: Also that picture will now be used for whenever anything crashes for me :P "Game crashed, Deal with it!"

My guess is that this certain hedgehog is trademarked...

So this is what I've been working on. I like it better than the one I originally lost :o
The mascot is just blank for now (gave him some clothes or whatever) after we decide what it should be
maybe I'll mess around and edit him but the general idea I'm going with is he (it) sits on the L and an arrow
is above his head. I wanted to incorporate the previous logo designs too.

Haven't added any color or effects, just want to see what you all think about it before moving another step. I do like it very much however :)

As already mentioned multiple times, we want to get rid of the multimedia symbols, since they clutter the logo and stand in contrast to "simple".

Easy. Any thoughts about the positions of the actual mascot on the logo?

I've got a logo for you. It's simple and fast:

please lets not get all Code::Blocks 12.11 up in here. Lets take the time to think of something good.

ugghhhh..

I just had an epiphany. The logo doesn't have to be an animal or a humanoid.. it can be a fruit!  :D
I vote orange!

What about something like this ? It's a very quick and dirty job, but i like the idea of a single plain color :

In fact i don't know if the hawk should be of profile or three-quarter, profile gives better one impression of speed  but three quarter better reports the bird.

I hesitate to show you guys this because it's nowhere near done, but here's what it's looking like so far:

Some things I have left to do:
  • The ears
  • The spots (I just threw some circles/ovals on there... I'll make the spots more irregular and not perfect ovals for the final version)
  • The eyes
  • The mouth
  • Touching up the colors
  • The head's shape & size
  • The black lines that connect the eyes and mouth
  • The tail
  • The "SFML"
  • In short, pretty much everything...

Please take this (the fact that it's nowhere near done and I plan on changing it and touching it up) into consideration when looking at this!

As I said, I hesitate showing people things in such an unfinished state, but I figure some early feedback could potentially be helpful.

Some kind of feedback I'm looking for:
  • Is the pose acceptable?
  • Is it too "cute" or young?
  • Is it the right animal? (I picked cheetah because it's instantly recognizable to people as a fast animal and it is generally easier to do a friendly-looking version of a cat than many other animals)
  • After seeing this quick sketch, do you still think a mascot is an idea worth exploring, or has this preview changed your mind?
