SFML 1.6 and ATI cards don't like each other. Link statically, or switch to SFML 2.

I ran into this as well, and there is a very easy workaround.

Of course, you could go to SFML 2.0 like Laurent suggested.

I don't see  a reason to start with 1.6 now. 2.0 is right around the corner :D
