Now that SFML 2.2 has been released, is this book now out of date and of no use?

NO!
The book (and everything for SFML 2.0 and 2.1) is still 100% valid*, there are no big, breaking changes between minor versions.

*Unless you find something extremely obscure and stupid that is in theory breaking but in practice so simple to translate to new SFML that a script could do it, like sf::Texture::bind.

As an addendum, I think that if you find something in the book that is not compatible with v2.2, mention it here and I'm sure they'll consider updating the thread to correct for the update.
