Are installation videos possible?
« on: August 27, 2015, 11:43:43 am »
Dear SFML management,

Do you think it would be possible for you to put embedded narrated YouTube videos on this site to explain how to install SFML per platform and compiler as new versions get released?

Thanks for your help.

Kind regards,

AshleyF

I don't think we'll do that. If you really need video tutorials, you can find some (more or less good) series on youtube.

But what would videos add compared to the official tutorials (especially for installation and setup)?

Lots of people are very resistant to reading long tutorials rather than the "easier" videos. I had actually been thinking about raising the idea of someone in the SFML team videoing themselves doing everything in the tutorial and saying the things in the (especially installation) tutorials so that people will still go for the official SFML things when they decide to go for videos rather than reading.

The issue with videos, is that they can become obsolete as soon as a new version of the library is released. Add to that the fact that a library user should get used to reading. There won't be any video for documentation. And pausing every few second to compare if we have the same thing as on the video, and rewinding the video a few second if I miss something is something I find very annoying and counter-productive. In a tutorial, I can stop mid-way, come back later and read again, and everything is still easy to follow and continue.

I completely agree Rosme, it's just that I know that lots of people perceive reading as more effort than watching a video and therefore use unofficial, possibly incorrect and almost definitely outdated videos.

Seriously? The installation tutorials are just a set of screenshots, with very little text. I don't think they are "hard" to follow... SFML users are supposed to be programmers, not kids :P

And 3/4 of what is said in these tutorials is generic stuff that users should already know about their development environment. We explain all this stuff for convenience, and to avoid tons of beginner posts on the forum, but you shouldn't learn these things here, really.

I know, I also don't think they're hard to follow, but there wouldn't be so many video tutorials if people didn't watch them.
