[C++ Plateformer 2D] An Octonaut Odyssey
« on: April 10, 2016, 12:52:48 am »
Hi everybody!

(I already put a topic on the french forum but maybe english speakers friends also want to see our work. I'll try to do my best to translate the post here : http://fr.sfml-dev.org/forums/index.php?topic=20109.0)

I'm not really active on SFML forum but I'm learning a lot with it all days. Mostly thanks to Laurent that answer every useful topics.

I registered on this forum because I want to show you a project we're currently working on with friends. I'm sure you guessed, it's based on SFML and hours of working.

AN OCTONAUT ODYSSEY

The first idea was to create generative environnement. We plan to create a full procedural game but because of a lack of time we choose a different way and we're glad that we did.

It's a 2D plateformer game in which you are an old amnesiac octopus. The story is classical for now, the octopus crash his spaceship on an unknown planet. He need to find his compagnons, the octobots, to repair his spaceship and leave this place.

The gameplay is mostly based on your ability to modify the ground. It's a mix of reflexion, agility and exploration that allows you to move forward in the game. It's a pacifist game where you never kill anybody and only a fall could lead you to death.

It's graphically colorful and psychedelic, between cute and less cute.

We started this game as a school project and it's a first experience in game creation for everyone. Some of us even learn C++ creating it. We had so much pleasure creating it that we didn't succeed to stop! Our commercials goals are not really clear yet but we are sure that we'll finish the game at least. We want that people can play it when it'll be done and polish.

This is our video to show you how it looks like :

We hope that we'll have a short demo in few months.

To integrate the video take out the "s" from "https" in the link ;)

Anyways, the game looks really nice in the trailer. Looking forward for a playable demo!

Hi guys! If you want to try An Octonaut Odyssey we created a demo version for the Stunfest, a french festival in Rennes. It gives you an idea of what we want to do even if it's not finish :)

You can find it here :
https://octostudio.itch.io/anoctonautodyssey

Enjoy!

(We'd be glad to ear feedbacks from you, it's still in progress so we have a lot to improve!)

Hum that's strange, in the first screen you should be able to choose between french and english.

hi
it doesn't give me a choice, it just took me to the game directly, even if i tried to change the language from main menu, by press Esc, it changes the main menu only while the game dialog remains the same as before.

Damned, I though that we'd remove this bug.. Could you try to remove the file save.osv and see if can choose the language on the screen with the flying spaceship? Did you download the windows or mac version?

Thank you for the usefull feedback :)

yeah, it works :)
after deleting save file, i'm able to get back to flying animation screen where i can choose the language. even though, it is trickier for new users, it would be nice if you can make it a bit obvious.

I totally agree, it's a shitty way to do it. I'll look closer to find where that come from :)

Thanks again for the feedback!

Hey, I tried it (by the way, is it just me or Itch.io download speed is very slow? It took me a good 15 minutes to download the demo).

The visuals are very nice, so props on that one. I loved how you could see the stars moving, and how the background moon (or planet?) shadow was moving as well, that was a nice touch.

Language selection worked fine for me, but you showed both languages in french ("français", "anglais"). Wouldn't be better to show the names on its native language? ("français", "english", "español", etc.)

Now, regarding gameplay, I must admit that I didn't understand it. You can modify the terrain by using S or F, but I didn't find a pattern, I was just pressing the keys randomly until I got a terrain on which could pass through. Maybe I'm missing something?
